Windows

Windows 10/11 (x64) — installer in final testing.

Windows on ARM runs the x64 installer under emulation.

System requirements

Mac

  • macOS 13 Ventura or newer · native builds for both Apple silicon (M-series) and Intel
  • About half a gigabyte of disk (the transcription engine is built in — nothing extra to install)
  • Recordings are kept as audio files, about 115 MB per hour of lecture, until you delete them. Keep a few GB free for a full semester.
  • Microphone permission, asked the first time you press ● Record

Windows

  • Windows 10/11, 64-bit (x64) — installer in final testing; join the list to get it first.
  • Import recordings, class packs and Back up everything are Mac features.

AI

  • Easiest: OpenRouter — sign in once, one account, every model.
  • Or an API key from Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (ChatGPT) or Google (Gemini).
  • Advanced: a local model via a custom command (e.g. Ollama).
  • No AI account? Recording, transcripts, search and your own flashcards still work, and Ask in Claude / ChatGPT / Gemini uses an AI app you already have.
  • Typical cost on the default Balanced model: about 5–7 cents per lecture hour for automatic notes, which is most of the spend. A student recording 4 classes pays about $4 a month to their own AI provider (light use about $1.50, heavy up to about $9).
  • API keys are pay-as-you-go and separate from a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription.

Internet

  • Internet is needed for AI note-writing, your school calendar feed, professor-site checks, OpenRouter sign-in and Pro license checks.
  • Recording and transcription are fully offline.

Private by architecture

  • Audio never leaves your laptop. Recording and transcription happen on your machine, offline.
  • Bring your own AI. One-click OpenRouter sign-in, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google (pay-as-you-go, usually cents per lecture, separate from any ChatGPT Plus / Claude Pro subscription). Tentaku never meters, marks up, or resells AI.
  • Keys are encrypted on your computer. Tentaku stores them scrambled with a key your operating system’s keychain protects, inside Documents/Tentaku.
  • Your data is yours. Plain files in Documents/Tentaku; export, back up, or walk away anytime. No lock-in, ever.
  • Never records on its own. You press the button, every time.
