FAQ

Is my lecture audio uploaded anywhere?

No. Recording and transcription happen entirely on your computer. What does leave: text excerpts sent to the AI you connected (your account, your choice), a license check to Lemon Squeezy if you have a Pro key, and read-only fetches of any calendar feed or public course page you add.

Do I have to pay for AI on top of Tentaku?

You bring your own AI — one-click OpenRouter, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. Keys are pay-as-you-go and separate from a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription. On the default Balanced model, automatic notes cost about 5–7 cents per lecture hour, and that’s most of the spend: a student recording 4 classes pays about $4 a month to their own AI provider (light use about $1.50, heavy up to about $9).

Which AI should I pick?

Easiest is OpenRouter: sign in once and you get Claude, GPT and Gemini models through one account. Any of the API keys works too. API keys are pay-as-you-go and separate from a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription.

I already pay for Claude. Can I use that?

Tentaku’s own AI features run on OpenRouter or an API key, which are billed separately from a Claude Pro plan. What your Claude plan does get you: use Tentaku inside the Claude desktop app. Install the Tentaku connector and ask Claude to make flashcards from today’s lecture or quiz you on it. When you use the connector, Claude reads your notes through the Claude app, so that text is processed by Anthropic like anything else you type into Claude.

Am I allowed to record my professor?

Ask first — it’s the right move and most professors say yes to note-taking. Rules vary by school and by state (some require everyone’s consent). You’re responsible for following yours; Tentaku only ever records when you press the button. More in Recording & consent.

What’s actually free?

One class, every feature, 3 recordings a week, forever. Have more classes (say, from the trial)? You pick the one that stays fully featured; the rest turn read-only — you can open, search, review and export them, but not record, add documents or run new AI builds there. Nothing is ever deleted. Pro unlocks your whole schedule.

How does the 14-day trial work?

It starts on first launch, automatically, with no card and no account. It’s granted once per computer. Three days before it ends, one card tells you the date and lets you choose your Free class early or go Pro. When it ends you keep every file and drop to Free: one class keeps every feature, and the others turn read-only.

Do I need an AI account to use it?

No. Recording, on-device transcripts, search, highlights and flashcards you write yourself work with no AI at all. For AI notes, connect your own AI — one-click OpenRouter, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google (Google has a free tier). No key? Ask in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini takes your notes to an AI app you already use.

What happens if I stop paying?

You drop back to the free tier. You never lose your data — every note, card, and transcript stays on your machine in plain files.

How many computers can I use?

A Pro key covers 2 (laptop + a replacement). Clearing the key on one frees the seat for another.

Does it work offline?

Recording and transcription work fully offline. AI notes and calendar-feed sync need internet. Pro keeps working offline for up to 7 days or 20 launches between license checks.

Do you connect to Canvas / Blackboard / Moodle / Brightspace?

Through your calendar-feed link — a read-only link your school gives you, no login and no key, so it’s allowed everywhere. Course files: download them as usual and Tentaku asks which class they belong to (or files them automatically if you turn that on). Tentaku never asks for your school password or any access code — just the read-only calendar link.

Can I get my flashcards into Anki?

One click exports any class’s deck as a file Anki imports directly.

Does Tentaku collect any data about me?

No. There’s no account, no telemetry, no crash reporting. The website uses cookieless, aggregate analytics only.

Windows?

The installer is built; it’s in final testing. Leave your email and you’ll get it first.
