Connect your AI
Tentaku records and transcribes on your computer. To write notes, flashcards and plans it uses an AI account that’s yours. Open Settings → Your AI:
Easiest: pick OpenRouter and sign in once — one account, every model, no key to copy. Or paste an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. Either way it’s pay-as-you-go, usually cents per lecture (separate from a ChatGPT Plus / Claude Pro subscription). Tentaku never meters or marks up your AI.
Your options
- OpenRouter — sign in once, every model (easiest). Click “✨ Sign in & connect — no key to copy”, approve Tentaku on OpenRouter’s page, done. Step by step.
- Claude — API key. Get a key from Anthropic.
- ChatGPT / OpenAI — API key. Get a key from OpenAI.
- Google Gemini — API key. Get a key from Google.
- Local AI — custom command (Ollama and similar). Advanced. Set it up.
API keys are pay-as-you-go and separate from a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription. On the default Balanced model, automatic notes cost about 5–7 cents per lecture hour — most of your AI spend. A student recording 4 classes pays about $4 a month (light use about $1.50, heavy up to about $9); Best adds little, because only lessons, drawings, Analyze and practice tests use the stronger model. Measured on Tentaku 0.30 with Claude models via OpenRouter; other providers’ prices differ.
After saving, press Test. When it works, the header shows AI ✓.
Balanced or Best
Each provider has two built-in choices: Balanced (fast, cheapest, the default) and Best (stronger, costs more per lecture).

On Best, the stronger model is used for lessons, drawings, Analyze and practice tests; notes, flashcards, definitions and answers stay on the Balanced model, and the cost estimate says which one a button uses. Change it in Settings → Your AI → AI quality.
Providers retire models from time to time. If yours says a model no longer exists, Tentaku switches to the next built-in choice and tells you once.
No AI connected?
Recording, on-device transcripts, search, highlights, flashcards you write yourself (Study → + New card) and every export work without any AI; AI buttons say “Connect an AI to use this”. You can also use Ask in Claude / ChatGPT / Gemini to take your notes to an AI app you already use, or start with a free Gemini key.
